China quake death toll rises to nearly 10,000, todays news

CHENGDU, China - A powerful earthquake toppled buildings, schools and chemical plants Monday in central China, killing nearly 10,000 people and trapping untold numbers in mounds of concrete, steel and earth in the country's worst quake in three decades.
The 7.9-magnitude quake devastated a region of small cities and towns set amid steep hills north of Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu. Striking in midafternoon, it emptied office buildings across the country in Beijing and could be felt as far away as Vietnam.
Snippets from state media and photos posted on the Internet underscored the immense scale of the devastation.

In the town of Juyuan, south of the epicenter, a three-story high school collapsed, burying as many as 900 students and killing at least 50, the official Xinhua news agency said. Photos showed people using cranes, mechanical hoists and their hands to remove slabs of concrete and steel.Buried teenagers struggled to break free from the rubble, "while others were crying out for help," Xinhua said. Families waited in the rain near the wreckage as rescuers wrote the names of the dead on a blackboard, Xinhua said. Read full story on this site...

Apple settles iPod class-action suit in Canada, todays news..

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc. has agreed to settle a pair of class-action lawsuits in Canada alleging it misled customers about the staying power of their iPods, the latest courtroom truce over the dwindling battery life of early generations of the device.
According to a court document, the Cupertino-based company is offering credits for its online store of about $44.75 (€29) to people who live in Canada and bought certain iPods there on or before June 24, 2004.
To be eligible, the battery life of their iPods—while continuously playing music—needs to have dropped to five hours or less for the first and second generation of the device and four hours or less for the third generation.
The lead plaintiffs in the lawsuits—iPod owners Ines Lenzi and Bradley Waddell—claimed Apple misrepresented iPods’ battery life by claiming they were capable of eight to 10 hours of continual music playback. After recharging, however, the iPods’ battery life began declining.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment beyond the notice of the settlement agreement Apple posted on its Web site.
Motions to approve the settlement are scheduled for June 11 in Quebec Superior Court and June 20 in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the two courts where the lawsuits were filed.
In 2005, the company settled a separate class-action lawsuit in the US over similar claims about iPod battery life. In that case, Apple agreed to give some iPod owners $50 in store credit or $25 in cash if the battery life in their early-generation iPods dropped below certain levels.

Fire in Pacquiao’s eyes, todays featured articles.

His cheekbones now more prominent and dressed in a fancy jacket moments after working out at the Wild Card on Tuesday afternoon, Pacquiao said that he can’t wait to get his hands on Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15."I have no fear," said Pacquiao, who goes after Marquez’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super-featherweight crown at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
"I am excited to finish the unfinished business," the 29-year-old Filipino hotshot said, referring to the score he is looking forward to settle with Marquez, the 34-year-old counter-puncher who battled him to a split draw in May 2004.
Pacquiao is so juiced up for the Marquez rematch that he made good on his promise to train at the Wild Card for eight solid weeks under Freddie Roach instead of just asking Roach to hop in a plane and meet up with him in the Philippines for training camp.
"I am trying hard to rekindle my thirst (for winning) just like I was starting my career," said Pacquiao, whose stock took a nosedive following unimpressive victories over Mexicans Jorge Solis and Marco Antonio Barrera in 2007.
In his almost-daily training at the gym — most especially during sparring days — Pacquiao would not wait for the buzzer to sound signaling the resumption of action as he would walk towards his sparmates’ corner so they could go at it again right away.
While most of his sparring partners are still being attended to by their cornermen during the rest period, Pacquiao would already position himself near the opposite corner just like what happened when he banged bodies with Juan Garcia of Arizona, said to be a clone of Marquez."Everything is good," Pacquiao said shortly before a gym barker requested that there be silence for one minute.
One could hear a pin drop at the gym and Pacquiao took the opportunity to say a little prayer in the far-end corner where Roach gives out instructions as everyone inside either stopped chatting or joined the fighter in contemplation.
Pacquiao’s training lasted two and a half hours with the only time he was not exerting effort was when he would go from one area to another and it came on the eve of an open workout scheduled Wednesday with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and representatives from various media outlets expected to gather there.
"This is the toughest training camp I’ve been," added Pacquiao before getting inside his Mercedes Benz 550SL which has a special spot in the parking area en route to his two-bedroom apartment at The Palazzo in La Brea, a mere 10-minute drive from the Wild Card.

NOTES: Freddie Roach left the gym while Manny Pacquiao was already doing his stretching as he had to go to Pasadena to train Bernard Hopkins…Top fight scribe Steve Kim of mamboing.com, a regular at the Wild Card where he also works out, said he’s never seen Pacquiao so pumped up for a fight.
"The last time I saw him this focused was during the first Barrera fight," said Kim…Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz said the fighter will go to Las Vegas by land on Monday. "Manny’s always superstitious about a lot of things." Top Rank head Bob Arum has offered a private plane.

How Pinoys earn money online?

by: pinoy money talk.com
How do most Pinoys earn money online? Let us count the ways.

Google Adsense, etc.
The most basic way to monetize a site is to have advertising networks such as Google Adsense, Bidvertiser, and AdBrite, among others, serve ads to your site. You add a simple code snippet provided by these networks to your site and when visitors click on the ad units, you get paid. Know the basics of Adsense in the Google Adsense thread or share how much you are earning from it by posting in the Google Adsense Earnings Survey thread.

Selling Ad Space
Some Filipino webmasters offer customized packages and lease space directly to advertisers. You need to have fresh, valuable content and a consistent amount of high traffic, though, in order to attract advertisers. Most of the time, Pinoy publishers merely join ad networks where they can sell ad space. Upon signing up, these networks usually provide links that are to be posted in the blog or site in order to receive payment. A few examples of these networks include Blog to Profit, Money4Blogs, Chitika, Crisp Ads, grokAds, Tagword, and Text Link Ads.

Paid Blogging
Rather than write mushy, self-centric, or showbiz-crazed stuff, a few Pinoy writer-bloggers use their creative juices to publish short reviews of a product, website, or service. Of course, they get paid in the process. Two of the popular sites where you can become a paid blogger are ReviewMe and PayPerPost.

Paid Outsourced Service (Content writing, programming, web design, SEO services)
Several Filipinos hang out in sites like Rent-a-Coder, Scriptlance, Getafreelancer, and eLance to offer programming, content writing, web design, or search engine optimization (SEO) services for a fee. Competition among fellow for-hires, though, is tough but once a good reputation is built, clients will ultimately follow. Learn how some PMT members are successfully earning as home-based freelancers in the Freelancers and Home-Based Workers board in the forum.

Affiliate Marketing
Sell someone else’s products and earn commissions for every lead or sale. A few have found luck earning regular income as affiliates of Commission Junction, LinkShare, ShareaSale, and previously Clickbank (Clickbank recently stopped accepting Filipinos as affiliates; click here to help petition Clickbank to allow Philippine affiliates again). Discuss strategies with other Pinoy affiliate marketers in the Internet and Affiliate Marketing board.

Online Selling
The bustling activity in eBay.ph, Auction.ph and Bidshot.com is a testament to the growing number of Filipino sellers. Sell your stuff by posting in eBay, transforming a Multiply account into an online shop, or setting up a full-fledged e-commerce site. Drop by the Online Auctions, Selling and Dropshipping board for more stories of Pinoys in the online selling arena.

HYIP and Autosurf Investing
If you are the gambler type, “investing” in autosurf or high yield investment programs (HYIP) might be for you. For a short period of time, you can earn double, triple, or even 10,000 times your principal without doing anything or, at the most, “autosurfing” other people’s websites. Beware, though, because 99% of these online “investment” programs are scams.

Get-paid-to (GPT) Programs
Not a lot of income can be expected here, but absolutely no cash outlay is needed either. Earn a few cents after several minutes (sometimes hours) of clicking links and reading advertisement emails. To meet fellow GPTers, go to the Free-to-Join Get-Paid-To Programs or visit the GPT Programs Discussion board to access a list of programs that are currently paying. Here are some more stories of how Pinoys earn money online.

Yorkshire Terrier,todays featured articles

The Yorkshire Terrier, (often called simply the Yorkie), is a breed of small dog in the toy category. The long-haired terrier is known for its playful demeanor and distinctive blue and tan coat. Yorkies can be very small, usually weighing not more than 7 pounds (3.18 kg); the standard of this breed does not mention the minimum weight accepted nor does it specify a height. Based on registrations of the American Kennel Club, Yorkshire Terriers became the second most popular dog breed in the United States in 2006, trailing only the Labrador Retriever.

Bichon Frisé, todays featured articles

A Bichon Frisé (French, literally meaning Curly lap dog; often spelled Bichon Frise in English) is a small breed of dog. They are popular pets especially to girls, similar to but larger than the Maltese. They are very intelligent and generally have happy dispositions. They are a non-shedding breed that requires regular grooming.
Color - Almost every piece of fur is white, sometimes with cream, apricot or buff shadings, usually around the ears. At least 90% must be white in a purebred Bichon for show. At least 50% must be white in a Bichon puppy for show. Color fades during the first year of life. During this time the coat also changes from puppy fluff to frisé.
Face - Expression should be alert, soft, inquisitive. The eyes are usually very dark, either black or dark brown. The skin surrounding the eye is also very dark, this is called a "halo" and is looked for in purebred puppies and dogs. The nose and lips are always dark. The ears are drop and covered in long, feathery fur. A characteristic Bichon Frisé "triangle" is formed by the black eyes and the nose, which are distinctly set of in contrast to the white fur.
Coat - The undercoat is soft and dense while the outercoat is curly, giving it a powderpuff look. The coat feels thick and should spring back if touched. The coat may feel velvety if is groomed correctly. The fur makes this particular dog look like a marshmallow puff dog.
Muscle-The muscle tone should be of exceptional quality, especially the lower thighs and buttocks area.

Chihuahua, todays featured dog

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, where it was discovered in 1850. Some academics believe the Chihuahua to be descended from Chinese hairless dogs—who may have crossed over from Asia to Alaska on a land bridge before continental separation created the Bering Strait—and bred with the ancient Toltec and Aztec Techichi dog, creating the modern-day Chihuahua. The American Kennel Club registered its first Chihuahua in 1905.

Sighthounds, todays featured dog breed

Sighthounds, also called gazehounds, are hounds that primarily hunt by speed and sight, instead of by scent and endurance, as scent hounds do.These dogs specialize in pursuing prey, keeping it in sight, and overpowering it by their great speed and agility. They must be able to quickly detect motion, so they have keen vision. Sighthounds must be able to capture fast, agile prey such as deer and hare, so they have a very flexible back and long legs for a long stride, a deep chest to support an unusually (compared to other dogs) large heart, very efficient lungs for both anaerobic and aerobic sprints, and a lean, wiry body to keep their weight at a minimum.
Sighthounds such as the Saluki may have existed for at least 5,000 years, with the earliest known sighthounds appearing in Eurasia. The earliest description of a sighthound in European recorded history comes from Arrian's Cynegeticus, of the 2nd century AD. Although today most sighthounds are kept primarily as pets, they have been bred for thousands of years to detect movement, chase, capture, and kill prey primarily by speed. They thrive on physical activity. Some have mellow personalities, others are watchful or even hostile towards strangers, but the instinct to chase running animals remains strong.
Apart from coursing, open-field coursing, and hunting, various dog sports are practiced with purebred sighthounds, and sometimes with Lurchers and Longdogs. Such sports include racing, lure coursing, and other events.

Miniature Siberian Husky, todays featured articles

The Miniature Siberian Husky is often mistaken for the Alaskan Klee Kai, with whom it shares similar qualities. However, the Alaskan Klee Kai was bred from the Alaskan Husky, Schipperke, and American Eskimo. The Miniature Siberian Husky is still extremely rare, but its popularity and the population is steadily rising as people discover these beautiful little sled dogs. Miniature Siberian Huskies are smaller versions of Siberian Huskies, the popular sled dogs. They share the same basic genetics and temperament.
Many folks make the mistaken assumption that Miniature Siberian Huskies are a separate breed from the standard sized Siberian Huskies, but they are not.
History
Smaller husky-type dogs are not a new phenomenon. In fact the smaller variety has been around in all likelihood at least as long as the huskies themselves if not longer. It seems that very small husky-type dogs lived alongside the larger sled dogs in many tribal Siberian communities. These dogs, technically classified as the "Tungus Spitz" by early explorers, were often described as being "the size of a fox". These dogs were commonly used as hunting dogs.
The modern Miniature Siberian Husky was first bred in the mountains of Hendersonville, North Carolina. The dogs were developed by Bree Hefner May along with the help with a few devoted Siberian husky fans in order to offer an alternative to potential husky owners, as the standard-sized dogs were often too much for novice owners to handle. Development of dogs continues under the supervision of Bree Hefner May.

Appearance
Currently, Miniature Siberian Huskies can reach a maximum weight of 18–25 pounds (7–8 kilograms) and reach a height of 12–14 inches (30–35 centimeters) at the withers. Their coat lengths and colors, and eye colors, offer the same range of variety seen in standard sized Siberian Huskies.

Temperament
Miniature Siberian Huskies exhibit temperaments and behaviors that are extremely similar to that of their larger counterparts. However, their smaller size can make them easier for a novice owner to handle.
Like their larger counterparts, Miniature Huskies are noted howlers. If this behavior becomes problematic or an irritation, owners can minimize it by making sure that the dog receives adequate attention from humans or other dogs. Huskies are pack animals and highly social; they can suffer from boredom and loneliness if left continually to their own devices.
They are quite friendly with everyone and at times can be stubborn. The dogs should never be trusted off leash, and do have a propensity for digging, just like standard sized siberian huskies.

Japanese Spitz, todays featured dog

The Japanese Spitz is a small, completely white, breed of dog that is thought to have been bred from the German Spitz for smallness beginning in the late 19th century in Japan. They were introduced to the United States in the 1950s. It is very similar to the American Eskimo Dog, and German Spitz, in size, overall appearance, and temperament.
History
In the late 19th century, Japanese cynologists cross-bred various dog breeds for a small dog breed with pure white coat. These breeds include the German Spitz, Siberian Samoyed, Russian Spitz, and American Eskimo. It was believed that these various dog breeds from different countries were introduced to Japan through Siberia and Manchuria. The end result was the Japanese Spitz. The breed was first exhibited in a dog show in Tokyo in 1921. Subsequently, a unified breed standard was established by the Japan Kennel Club in 1948. It gained much popularity in Japan in the 1950s, and was introduced to Europe and North America around the same period of time.
An adult Japanese Spitz typically weighs 5 to 10 kg, and stands at 32 to 38 cm off of the ground at the withers. Their coats are divided into 2 layers. The outer layer consists of long straight hair standing off from the body, used for insulating against fluctuating temperatures. The under layer consists of short, soft and dense fur that is always a pure white color. The tail is covered with long hair and is carried curled over the back. The coat is short on the bottom half of the legs and has feathering on the forelegs. The dryness of their coat makes it virtually free of odor. The ears are small and pointed upright, and the muzzle tapers slightly. The large oval eyes are dark and slightly slanted, and the nose and lips are black. The face of the Japanese Spitz is wedge-shaped.

Papillon, todays featured dog breed

The Papillon is a small, friendly, elegant toy dog of fine-boned structure, distinguished from other breeds by its butterfly-like ears. The Papillon is one of the oldest of the toy breeds. Papillons were bred for companionship, and make excellent watch dogs. Papillons ['pæp i ,jɑn] are white with markings of any color. Tricolors and black and white are common colors. The most distinctive aspect of the Papillon is its large ears, which are well fringed with colored (not white) silky hair. The color covers both eyes and the front and back of the ears to give the ideal butterfly look. A white blaze and noseband on the face is preferred. Tricolours should be black and white, with tan spots over eyes, inside ears and under the tail. As puppies they begin to grow more hair on and in ears, on and around their tail, and their feet. There are two ear variations of this breed, the completely upright ears of the more common Papillon, and the dropped spaniel-like ears of the Phalène. The AKC considers the Phalène and the Papillon the same breed. Countries whose breed clubs follow the FCI standard consider Papillons and Phalènes two separate breeds. The Papillon coat is abundant, long, and silky. There is no undercoat. Ears are well-fringed with the inside covered with silken hair of medium length. Tail is long, well-fringed, set on high, arched over back with fringes falling to side to form plume. The head is slightly rounded between the ears, and the muzzle is fine, tapering, and narrower than the skull with an abrupt stop. The accepted standard size varies slightly among different organizations' breed standards, but it generally ranges from 8 inches (20 cm) to 11 inches (28 cm) at the withers. papillons usually weigh from 6 to 10 pounds (3-5kg).

Miniature Schnauzer, todays featured dog breed

The Miniature Schnauzer is a breed of small dog of the Schnauzer type that originated in Germany in the mid-to-late 19th century. Miniature Schnauzers developed from crosses between the Standard Schnauzer and one or more smaller breeds such as the Poodle, Miniature Pinscher, or Affenpinscher. The breed remains one of the most popular, and is currently the 10th most popular breed in the U.S.
The breed is generally good with children, recognizing that they need gentle play. Miniature Schnauzers are generally highly intelligent and easy to train. They can, however, require a great deal of attention and affection from their owner, regardless if they are to be used as show dogs or home pets. If not given affection on a regular basis the breed can become depressed, which can decrease their mental and physical health. They are highly playful dogs, and if not given the outlet required for their energy they can become bored and invent their own "fun".

Jack Russel Terrier, todays featured dog

The Jack Russell Terrier is a type or landrace of small, principally white-bodied, smooth or rough-coated terrier that has its origins in fox hunting. The name "Jack Russell" has been used to describe a wide array of small white terriers, but is now most commonly used to describe a working terrier. The Jack Russell Terrier is not the same as a Parson Russell Terrier, which is a breed recently created by narrowing the Jack Russell standard. The Parson Russell Terrier is primarily a show dog, and is rarely found in the hunt field. The Jack Russell Terrier is also not the same thing as an Australian Jack Russell Terrier or Russell Terrier, which are dogs first brought into the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 2000 and the United Kennel Club in 2001, and which are maintained under a different breed standard and described as having been developed in Australia out of dogs originating in England. The Jack Russell is a working terrier. Terrier work requires a dog that will bark at prey so that the dog can be located underground and be dug out if necessary. Because of this, Jack Russell Terriers were bred to be very vocal dogs.Jack Russell Terriers are also very intelligent, high-energy dogs – requirements of a working dog which must problem-solve in the field and work tirelessly against often formidable quarry. Due to their compact size, friendly and inquisitive nature, and intelligence, Jack Russells are popular as pets. Prospective buyers should be aware, however, that while these dogs may enjoy sitting in a lap, they are not “lap dogs” – they are dogs that require training and regular and consistent exercise to maintain their temperament and to occupy their minds.

West Highland White Terriers, todays featured dog breed

West Highland White Terriers, commonly known as Westies, are a breed of dog known for their spirited personality and brilliant white coat. They are friendly, good with older children, and thrive on lots of attention. Westies, like most terriers, have plenty of spirit for a dog their size. This breed is commonly recognised through its use as a mascot for Black & White (a brand of Scotch whisky), and on the packaging of Cesar brand dog food. Moreover, the West Highland White Terrier has appeared frequently in broadcast commercials, three examples being Target fashion outlet, Mondo fruit drinks and Kraft Philadelphia Light Cream Cheese. They have bright, deep-set eyes, as dark as possible, with a penetrating gaze. The ears are small, pointed and erect, giving the animal an alert ready-for-anything look.[1]
They typically weigh about 15 to 20 lb (7.5–10 kg) and their average height is 11 in. (28 cm) at the withers. Their tails, typically naturally "carrot-shaped", should never be docked and are held upright. The tail should be between 5-6 inches.
They also have deep chests, muscular limbs, a slightly convex skull, a short and a closely fitted jaw with scissors bite (lower canines locked in front of upper canines, upper incisors locked over lower incisors.) Their teeth generally appear quite large for the size of the dog. Their ears should be held more or less upright, but not pointing straight up; it is essential for any dog to carry themselves properly when showing. Westies have a very strong bone structure for their size.
They have a soft, dense undercoat and a rough outer coat, about 2 in. long, that requires regular grooming. Some Westies have "brandy stains" on their backs and/or feet, but this is undesirable in show/breeding specimens. The natural coat is of medium length and somewhat shaggy like that of a Cairn Terrier. Many enthusiasts prefer the "lion cut" where the fur around the face is left long like a lion's mane, but the rest of the fur is cut short.
Their paws are slightly webbed, which one can notice by trying to pass their finger between the dog's toes.

Japanese Chin, todays featured dog breed

The Japanese Chin (狆), also known as the Japanese Spaniel is the dog of Japanese Royalty. A lap dog and companion dog, this toy breed is a small spaniel with a distinctive heritage.Japanese Chins stand about 20 to 27 cm (8 to 11 in) in height at the withers and weigh 2 to 7 kg (4 to 15 lb) (Although some have been known to be over 20lbs). They have straight, silky, profuse long hair that is most often black and white, lemon and white, red and white, or rarely black and white with tan points. They have feathered tails that curl up over their backs. Their faces have an "oriental" appearance, with a short, upturned muzzle and large, wide-set eyes that have white visible in the inner corners, creating an astonished expression.
These dogs commonly have a black spot or blaze in the middle of the white fur on their heads known as
Buddha's Thumbprint. This designation can be attributed to the Emperor Ming of Han China, who owned many of these dogs.
History
There is some debate as to the origins of this breed. Some say that the ancestors of these dogs first appeared in Japan around the year 732, as gifts from the rulers of Korea. Others attribute the ancestors of the Chin to breeds of Chinese origin.
Professor Ludvic von Schulmuth studied canine origins by studying the skeletal remains of dogs found in human settlements as long as ten thousand years ago. The Professor created a genealogical tree of Tibetan dogs that shows the "Gobi Desert Kitchen Midden Dog", a scavenger, evolved into the "Small Soft-Coated Drop-Eared Hunting Dog". From this dog evolved the Tibetan Spaniel, Pekingese, and Japanese Chin. Another branch coming down from the "Kitchen Midden Dog" gave rise to the Papillon and Long-haired Chihuahua and yet another "Kitchen Midden Dog" branch to the Pug and Shih Tzu.
Portuguese sailors introduced the breed to Europe in the 1600s by presenting some to Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort to King Charles II of England.
An American naval officer, Commodore Perry, helped make this dog famous in England in 1853 when he presented a breeding pair to Queen Victoria after returning from Japan. This was the first canine gift given to the royal family. He is also credited with this breed's appearance in America when he later gave a pair to the President of the United States.
